What is Regional Anesthesia?

Home Health Guide What is Regional Anesthesia?

Regional anesthesia is the process of eliminating the sensation in a part of the body. With this method, the person remains aware of the surrounding events during the surgery but does not feel pain in the specific area being treated.

For example, the pain sensation in a hand can be blocked through a regional block. Alternatively, epidural or spinal anesthesia can be applied, where nerves emerging from the spinal cord are blocked with local anesthetic drugs, thereby removing the pain sensation from the area being operated on. Regional anesthesia is applied to appropriate pediatric patients based on the type of surgical procedure and under the guidance of an experienced anesthetist.
