Onur, who explained that patients usually come with red eye problems, said, "Not every red eye is conjunctivitis, we can tell this through microscopic examination." Stating that conjunctivitis is one of the most common eye infections, Onur explained that there are 3 types of conjunctivitis: viral, bacterial, and allergic. He said, "The viral type caused by viruses (similar to those that cause colds) is highly contagious, but usually heals on its own within a few days without the need for treatment. However, viral infections should not be underestimated. Especially Adenoviral Conjunctivitis can be very serious. Bacterial Conjunctivitis caused by bacteria; if left untreated, it can cause serious damage to the eye. There is intense discharge (yellow-green in color) and it is contagious. Allergic Conjunctivitis, also known as eye cold, can be seen in those allergic to pollen, dust, or animal hair."
WITH UPPER RESPIRATORY INFECTIONS
Op. Dr. Onur stated that they have seen many cases of viral conjunctivitis in children recently due to influenza outbreaks. "Because in children, it can spread with coughing and sneezing, especially along with upper respiratory infections. It is more common in children for hygienic reasons. It also spreads in schools and daycare centers," he said.
TREATMENT METHODS
Op. Dr. Hatice Onur explained that the treatment of conjunctivitis depends on the factor causing the infection and said the following about treatment methods: "There is no specific treatment for viral infections, but medications that reduce symptoms and help patients feel comfortable until the infection passes can be recommended. Bacterial infections respond to antibiotic treatment. Antibiotic eye drops and ointments are used. In allergic conjunctivitis, itching and redness caused by allergies are relieved with eye drops."
IF LEFT UNTREATED, IT CAN CAUSE VISION PROBLEMS
Dr. Onur expressed that conjunctivitis heals without leaving permanent damage when treated, saying, "However, if treatment is delayed or the patient does not use eye drops or medications, the condition can worsen and turn into Keratitis." Onur explained that Keratitis is the inflammation of the cornea, the transparent covering of the eye, saying, "If correct treatments are not applied, excessive itching occurs in the eye. Frequent itching can later lead to keratoconus, a disease caused by thinning of the cornea, which results in permanent vision impairment. So, a simple conjunctivitis can also affect the eye's vision part."
PREVENTION METHODS
Op. Dr. Hatice Onur, an eye doctor at Private Ümit Vişnelik Hospital, listed the ways to prevent conjunctivitis as follows: "Wash your hands frequently, do not use others' personal items (such as towels, makeup materials). If you have an eye infection, do not swim in the pool. Use swimming goggles when swimming. After washing your hands, put on and remove your contact lenses, and renew the lens solution each time. Cover your mouth when sneezing or coughing, then avoid touching your eyes. Do not share your lenses with others. Clean surfaces such as kitchen countertops, sinks, and cell phones that your hands touch frequently."
