Iodine deficiency causes serious health problems

Home Health Guide Iodine deficiency causes serious health problems

Private Ümit Batıkent Hospital Internal Medicine Specialist, Dr. Gökçe Kundakçı, provided valuable information about diseases caused by iodine deficiency. She emphasized that the amount of iodine needed varies by age, stating: “On average, 150 micrograms of iodine should be taken per day. For pregnant and breastfeeding women, this requirement may increase to 250-300 micrograms per day.”

Dr. Kundakçı explained that the first and most significant symptom of iodine deficiency is an enlarged thyroid gland (goitre). "If there is not enough iodine reaching the thyroid, it cannot produce the thyroid hormone we need," said Dr. Kundakçı. She listed the symptoms of iodine deficiency in the body as follows: “Swelling of the thyroid gland in the neck (goitre), fatigue, weakness, thinning hair, dry skin, weight gain, and a feeling of suffocation."

CAUSES MENTAL DEFICIENCIES IN CHILDREN

Dr. Kundakçı highlighted that studies show iodine levels in humans have decreased by about 50% over the last 30 years. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), more than 2 billion people worldwide suffer from iodine deficiency. Dr. Kundakçı added that around 50 million people have experienced severe symptoms, including brain damage. Today, iodine deficiency is recognized by the WHO as the most common and preventable cause of impaired brain and intelligence development in children. "At least 30 million children cannot develop sufficient intelligence due to iodine deficiency," she pointed out.

THIS IS DONE WITH A URINE TEST

Dr. Kundakçı mentioned that iodine deficiency can be detected through a simple urine test. “Once iodine deficiency is detected, it should be addressed with appropriate nutritional supplements and nutrients.” She also noted that the use of iodized salt is another well-known method to eliminate iodine deficiency. Additionally, certain foods can help combat iodine deficiency, including vegetables such as pumpkin, garlic, turnip, spinach, and products like fish, cod, and tuna. Dairy products such as milk, yogurt, and cheese, as well as fruits like strawberries, are also beneficial.
