Pay Attention to Water and Mineral Loss
Şükriye Eral, Dietitian at Eskişehir Özel Ümit Batıkent Hospital, stated that the loss of water and minerals caused by high temperatures in summer can lead to serious health problems. She noted that symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, weakness, and feelings of faintness may stem from these losses.
Be Mindful of Your Water Intake
Eral explained that daily water needs vary depending on age, gender, chronic illnesses, and overall health status. As a practical calculation method, she suggested consuming 40 milliliters of water per kilogram of body weight. However, she reminded that tea, coffee, and carbonated drinks increase water loss, adding: "We should drink as much extra water as the amount of tea and coffee we consume."
Choose Mineral Water Carefully Instead of Carbonated Drinks
Emphasizing that carbonated beverages are definitely not recommended in summer, Eral said that if mineral water is preferred, attention should be paid to its sodium content. She stressed that individuals with hypertension should opt for low-sodium mineral water.
Mediterranean Diet Recommendation
Eral also recommended adopting a Mediterranean-style diet during the summer months: "Consuming 2–3 servings of fruits and vegetables a day helps maintain the body’s fluid balance."
